Research

Our research activities are strong with the vast majority of staff being research-active. The School's Departments are significant partners in the Commonwealth Government Co-Operative Research Centre programs and State Government Centres of Excellence. We are also active in development and consultancy activities collaborating with industry, the community, and the engineering profession.

Curtin Engineering's research programs aim to engage in, and exploit the essential links between, fundamental, applications-driven and wholly applied research, thereby continuously regenerating research activity and maximising the involvement of staff in the School.

The School's areas of research and a measure of its achievements can found in its 2006 Research and Development Report.

The School has over 150 research students (mainly PhD) that is growing into a lively community. A book of abstracts by research students presenting at Curtin Engineering's November 2006 postgraduate-student colloquium can be viewed here.

Further details of research projects and opportunities for collaboration or PhD and Masters by Research study can be found at the Departmental website from the links on the left.

Gilbert

William Gilbert, or less commonly Gilberd, was born May 24, 1544, Colchester, England and died November 30, 1603, in London, probably of the plague, was an English physician to Elizabeth I and James I and natural philosopher known for his investigations of magnetism and electricity. Gilbert was the originator of the term "electricity" and many regard him as the father of electrical engineering or father of electricity.
